CITY OF TACLOBAN – So far, only 40,000 people in Eastern Visayas have registered as voters for the 2022 elections.
Attorney Felicisimo Embalsado, regional deputy director of the Elections Commission in Eastern Visayas, said the low number of registrants could be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the May 2016 elections, the Eastern Visayas Comelec office reported that at least 2.2 million of the 2.6 million voters turned out to vote in the national and local elections.
Embalsado said Comelec was still encouraging people qualified to vote to register for the national elections on May 9, 2022.
But he said that people who go to registry offices should pay attention to all health protocols, such as wearing masks and shields and keeping safe distances from each other.
Comelec offices are open from Monday to Thursday. Friday is intended for the disinfection of the facilities.
The registration period will end on September 30, 2021.
According to Comelec’s regional registries, 40,025 people had registered to vote in 2022.
