PBA: ex-communist Noli Eala scolds teams without ‘intention’ to win titles

Former PBA commissioner Noli Eala said on Friday that teams that were not playing for titles should leave the league.

Eala’s reaction came as Terrafirma Dyip handed out scoring champion CJ Pérez to San Miguel Beer for 3 marginal players and a draft pick.

“PBA teams will do their best to win. That is inherent in competition. It is up to the PBA to ensure ownership in exchanges that are supposed to achieve that goal while maintaining the integrity of the league,” Eala tweeted.

“Now those who have no intention of winning championships have nothing to do with being in the PBA.”

The Dyip agreed to let go of Pérez, the 2019 rookie of the year, in exchange for Gelo Alolino, Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, Russel Escoto and a 2021 draft pick.

The commissioner’s office has not yet approved the deal.

Terrafirma and featured in a similar trade in 2017, when Dyip ceded their rights to the first draft pick to San Miguel.

That deal allowed the Beermen to sign Christian Standhardinger.
