‘Urong-sulong’? Palace denies changing after Duterte refused to ease age restrictions

MANILA, Philippines – President Duterte’s decision to reverse the recommendation to allow children ages 10-14 to leave their homes in modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) areas cannot be construed as a fickle mindset or a sea change in the implementation of its policy to curb the coronavirus pandemic, Malacañang said on Tuesday.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque denied that the government was rambling, noting that it was not the first time the president had rejected the recommendation of the Interagency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF).

“We do not hesitate because I know, this is the first time, no, the second time that the president has revoked the recommendation,” he said during his regular televised online press conference.

(We are not being fickle because I know this is the first time, I mean the second time the president revoked the recommendation.)

“I don’t think so, kasi IATF was created by the president to help as a recommendation body. In fact, the IATF has no other legislative foundation than the exercise of executive power, ”he also said.

In December of last year, the President recalled his approval of the proposal of the education sector to carry out the pilot implementation of face-to-face classes in the face of the threat of the new variant of the coronavirus.

“Now this is 10-14 because of the new variant. So I think people will understand why the President made this decision because we don’t know enough about this new variant, ”said Roque.

(And now, the 10-14 year permit was also revoked because of the new variant. I think people will understand the president’s decision because we don’t know enough about this new variant.)

In a prerecorded speech Monday, Duterte said those 10-14-year-olds should stay home as a precaution against the new Covid-19 variant already detected in some parts of the country.

So far, there are 17 people in the Philippines who have been confirmed infected with the British variant of SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.
