MANILA, Philippines – The Municipality of Bontoc in Mountain Province may extend the localized lockdown it imposed on several villages due to the new Covid-19 variant beyond January 31, Mayor Franklin Odsey said Monday.

Odsey said the localized lockdown may be extended if the tracing of close contacts of the new Covid-19 variant cases remains unfinished by the end of the month.

“If the contact trackers now in our municipality cannot complete their contact tracing, we will extend the block,” Odsey said in a televised briefing.

The villages of Samoki, Bontoc Ilim, Caluttit and Poblacion in Bontoc are under localized blockade until January 31.

Twelve Bontoc residents were among the reported cases of variant B.1.1.7 which is said to be more contagious than the previous variant of Covid-19.

Of the 12, Odsey said two are still in the hospital, three are in home quarantine, six have been discharged and are in home quarantine and one is about to be released from the hospital.

Odsey himself tested positive for the coronavirus and is in isolation.

He said he cannot determine if his case is the first variant of Covid-19 or the new variant.
