Disney’s ‘Soul’ shows us how to live life for real!

As a peace offering and parting gift, 2020 gave us a thoughtful and tender surprise in the form of the new Disney-Pixar movie, soul, which launched on Disney + on Christmas Day. The stars of animated films Jamie foxx and Tina fey as the voices of the main characters, Joe Gardner and 22, respectively. The film is a breath of fresh air as it addresses the mundaneness of everyday life and the importance of passion and purpose to the soul.

Joe Gardner, an aspiring professional jazz musician who has settled for teaching band in high school for the attractive job security, looks for more in his career. Despite his mother’s disapproval, Joe gets the concert of his dreams playing in the quartet of a renowned musician. However, just when things seem to be looking up for him, Joe has a near-death experience that transfers him to a realm between life and afterlife. Here, he meets Soul 22, a pessimistic unborn soul who refuses to live a life on Earth. Joe coaches 22 to find his “spark” and give him a reason to live, all while trying to get back into his body and get on with his own life.

The film addresses many issues relevant to our society today, from the tremendous importance placed on career and professional achievement to the routine that we see as our daily routine. Often times, we are desperate to escape from our everyday lives: we live on weekends and holidays, not seeing the beauty that surrounds us in the little things. At one point in the movie, 22 discovers joy in things like leaves falling from trees, conversations between two friends, and even pizza and lollipops. Joe dismisses his fun as “an ordinary life.” Fixing on his talent for jazz as his only purpose in life, Joe realizes that he often overlooks simple pleasures. Joe’s story serves as a warning of the obsession with which we link our individual worth to our careers and achievements.

Although it is an animated movie, soul It is a must see for all ages, which opens our eyes to the reality with which many of us live. Featuring the first black lead in a Pixar movie, the film breaks records and breaks boundaries in more ways than one.soul is now airing on Disney +.
