MORE than 500 suspected drug ecstasy tablets were intercepted by airport authorities at the Central Mail Exchange Center (CMEC) at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Friday, January 8, 2021.

The chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Debold Sinas, said the tablets were valued at around one million pesetas.

Sinas said that 535 tablets were discovered by the Customs Office in an air parcel wrongly declared as documents. The shipment came from the Netherlands.

The contraband was turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), which will carry out an investigation and possibly prosecute the people involved in the illegal importation.

The importation of illicit drugs violates the General Dangerous Drugs Law of 2002 (RA Nº 9165) and Section 1401 of the Modernization and Customs Tariffs Law (RA Nº 10863).

“The crackdown on illegal drugs targets shabu, marijuana, and so-called party drugs such as ecstasy. The PNP is fully aware of how resourceful these narco-unions have become, but make no mistake. We will go after you.” Sinas said in a statement.

A few days ago, the Police Drug Control Group seized 2,800 ecstasy pills during a series of operations in Cainta, Rizal and Ermita, Manila. (SunStar Philippines)
