In an emphatic victory, Ryan Garcia knocks out Luke Campbell, proving he’s not just a social media fighter.
Going into this fight, onlookers thought Garcia was over the top, but he responded and dusted himself off after a knockdown of Campbell in the second round boxing match. Campbell threw a devastating left hook to the body, knocking the Mexican-American fighter to the ground for the first time in his career. The 22-year-old fighter immediately stood up, composed and determined to continue the fight. Garcia was able to sustain the fight by continuing to throw left-hand combos that sank into Campbell’s body, then turned advantageous in the fifth and seventh rounds.
Garcia, who is 21-0 with 18 KOs, leveled the knockdown count late in the fifth round when Campbell was sent staggering through the ropes with Garcia’s left hook. The 2012 British Olympic gold medalist was quickly getting tired of each of Garcia’s hard blows, one after another. Although Campbell was able to survive the sixth round, his error in judgment left him on all fours in the seventh round as he mistakenly prepared for an attack to the head when Garcia landed a knockout punch to the body with his left hand. Campbell was unable to get to his feet before the 10-second count, allowing Garcia to become the first man to beat Campbell by stoppage and subsequently become the new WBC lightweight champion.
In a post-fight interview on DAZN, Garcia discusses the motivation behind the fight and said, “You are not who people tell you. [you] are. You are who you choose to be. And I chose to be champion tonight. I wasn’t going to let anything stop me. “Campbell responds, pointing and praising the young fighter,” That was the hardest hit I ever got. I tried and tried to get up, but couldn’t. I felt it coming and I was moving backwards. , and when you move back, my body relaxed a bit, and that was the exact moment that it hit me. ”
