SAN FERNANDO CITY, Pampanga, Philippines – After celebrating his daughter’s seventh birthday with his family in the town of Santa Rita, Pampanga province, on Saturday, Federico “Tek” Pineda accompanied his uncle home.

He did not return that night.

Pineda, a 29-year-old construction worker and father of two, was shot and killed by Cpl. Eframe Ramirez, a police officer who was chasing a robbery suspect.

The police officer was taken into the custody of his superiors while the murder was being investigated and had surrendered his firearm, said Captain Renemer Cruz, the municipal police chief.

White T-shirt

Ramírez was reportedly pursuing a suspect in the robbery and stabbing of a couple who owned a computer store in the Sunny Side Subdivision in the town of San Matías.

Pineda’s relatives claimed that the murder was a clear case of mistaken identity.

His sister, Michelle Pagauisan, said Pineda was wearing a white T-shirt and was driving a motorcycle when he was shot. The suspect was also wearing a white T-shirt and was traveling the same route as Pineda, according to other relatives, citing video footage.

“My brother was not used to wearing a mask. I preferred to wear a shirt over my face, ”said Pagauisan.

He said Pineda was confronted and then pursued by police officers who shot him. His brother was shot in the back and fell when he reached the door of a relative’s home.

The suspect, later identified as Joven Basera, was arrested at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Colonel Arnold Thomas, police director for the city of Ibay, Pampanga, said investigators would investigate the shooting.
