The mayors of Metro Manila are awaiting the guidelines on obtaining vaccines against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) that will be used in the inoculation of its components.
Parañaque city mayor Edwin Olivarez, president of the Metro Manila City Council, said the group was waiting for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Health (DoH) to issue guidelines and procedures on the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines.
“The FDA, the Department of Health and the Secretary [Carlito] Gálvez will give guidance to all local governments, not only in Paranaque, but in all of Metro Manila that allocated funds for the purchase of the vaccine, ”Olivarez said in a television interview.
Expect the procurement guidelines to be released in January.
Olivarez said that all local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila allocated funds for their own vaccination programs. The city of Parañaque set aside P1 billion to purchase doses of the JNJ-78436735 vaccine from the Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceutica.
The mayor added that his initiative would help the national government to immunize the entire Philippine population.
“Some LGUs will provide budgets so that they can help the national government, so that the national government can focus on the provinces, municipalities on the outskirts of Metro Manila,” Olivarez said.
Parañaque plans to inoculate 100,000 of its inhabitants once it receives a vaccine, which will be obtained directly from the manufacturer.
“We will ensure that this vaccine is safe and we will not allow this contraband vaccine to occur in this city,” added Olivarez.
