UPDATED JANUARY 03, 2021
Today, the DoH reports 891 new cases and 4 deaths. Davao City leads the way with 65 new cases.
Two NCR cities are back in the top five: Manila City and Quezon City.
Meanwhile, of the 11,705 people tested, 675 or 5.8 percent test positive.
Philippines, yesterday (Jan 2, 2021)
- With a total of 1,097 new cases in the country, CALABARZON took the lead with 206 (18.8 percent) cases.
- The top 5 regions (IVA Region, NCR, Davao Region, Central Luzon and Eastern Visayas) accounted for 65 percent of yesterday’s figures.
- Mega Manila’s low numbers are due to poor testing over New Years weekend. This explains the higher daily positive rates in the National Capital Region, since the NCR is the main contributor to the total daily cases in the country.
- Two provinces in the Davao region were the top two provinces yesterday: Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur.
- Four of the 17 cities in the NCR were among the top 20 cities / townships. They were: Quezon City, Manila City, Valenzuela and Pasig City.
The week that was … and other numbers that matter
- The holiday season is responsible for the lowest numbers on record. The lowest Rt shows the correlation in the lowest numbers. With this, the Philippines remains 29th in the world ranking for total COVID-19 cases.
- Consider the increase in COVID19 cases and deaths in the country before the Christmas and New Year holidays, and their eventual decline afterward.
- The case and death data were related to the country’s testing capacity. Notice in the graphs below the large decrease in test capacity and of course the concomitant increase in daily positive rates as the number of tests decreased. In short, we are not seeing the real picture of the pandemic last holiday weekends because not enough people were tested.
The World (January 2, 2021)
- With 615,000 new cases and more than 8,300 deaths yesterday, the world is just a few thousand cases short of the total of 85,000,000. The fatality rate is 2.17 percent with more than 1.84 million deaths to date.
- The United States continues to lead the number of cases and deaths in the world. The number of new cases in the state of California averages more than 50,000 daily with one death from COVID19 every 10 minutes in the state.
