FUKUOKA – Kane Tanaka, the world’s oldest person born the same year as the Wright brothers’ first powered flight, celebrated his 118th birthday in southwestern Japan on Saturday.

Tanaka, born on January 2, 1903, was recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest living person in the world in March 2019 at the age of 116. Among those born in the same year is the British novelist George Orwell.

He also set an all-time Japanese age record in September last year at 117 years and 261 days.

Currently living in a nursing home in Fukuoka, Tanaka celebrated her birthday with other residents. She was pleased and said, “Clap everyone,” according to the installation.

He usually spends his time exercising, doing calculations, and playing Reversi. He has a big appetite and likes to eat chocolate and drink Coca-Cola, the nursing home said.

When asked about the secret to his longevity, Tanaka replied, “Eat delicious food and study.” He said he aspires to live to be 120 years old.

“It’s a tough situation because of the coronavirus pandemic, but Kane is fine,” said his 61-year-old grandson Eiji. “I am happy that he has fun every day.”
