With nine points, one rebound, one assist and one charge (and possibly a second no-call) in twenty-four minutes, it was good to see Derrick White make his season debut last night against the Los Angeles Lakers. It will take White a couple more games to smooth out the rough edges, but Spurs fans know it will be worth the wait.
All that said, Devin Vassell didn’t play. Isn’t it reasonable to ask that Vassell continue to play even with White’s return? A full Spurs roster is not only ideal, but necessary. That being said, the distribution of minutes should not be at the expense of developing Spur’s latest lottery selection.
And while we’re at it, what did Trey Lyles do to get the DeMarre Carroll treatment? With LaMarcus Aldridge facing the Los Angeles Lakers, Silver & Black could have used all the height and weight at their disposal.
Well a quick trip to basketball-reference.com and I was able to get some answers. In terms of height, the Spurs have Jakob Poeltl (7’1 ”), LaMarcus Aldridge (6’11”), Luka Samanic (6’10 ”), followed by Drew Eubanks and Trey Lyles at 6’9”. Aldridge was out and I don’t think there’s a Spurs fan sadistic enough to wish Samanic time with Anthony Davis just yet.
So if you go with a player heavy enough not to get shoved into the paint, then Rudy Gay, who is just an inch shorter than Eubanks and Lyles, is the sturdiest at 250 pounds. Poeltl and Eubanks weigh 245. Lyles is just 234.
So on the height and weight crossover scale, even with Aldridge out, Lyles is fifth in both categories.
Covering Anthony Davis, who is listed at 6’10 ”253, the best matchup the Spurs have is Aldridge. In his absence, Poeltl and Eubanks are definitely going to create the most chaos for The Brow. That doesn’t mean a lot of chaos can be spread over the top pick in the 2012 draft, as he scored 34 points and 11 rebounds in 35 minutes to welcome his new year.
Once again, when you question Pop’s tactics and strategy, there is a greater than likely chance that he will walk away with his tail between his legs.
The Spurs are free today, but play every other day this week and finish back-to-back games at Minnesota this weekend.
Hopefully LaMarcus will be back in time to meet with LeBron’s partner in crime on Thursday.
