Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 1) – A 12-year-old girl from Lanao del Norte died on New Year’s Day after being hit by a stray bullet while playing outside her home after midnight, the Philippine National Police said Friday.
PNP spokesman Ilderbrandi Usana said police have not yet conducted an autopsy because the bullet is still in the girl’s head. He added that it can be difficult to track down the perpetrator if he used a loose firearm, but he swore justice if the weapon is registered.
“If this firearm is registered, we will inform the public who is the owner of the weapon. You can count on us to accuse the person,” he said at a news conference.

In another incident, a Malabon City policewoman was arrested for firing her PNP-issued firearm hours before the New Year’s Eve in the country. Usana said neighbors reported hearing the shots from the home of Police Sergeant Karen Borromeo.
“We assume that her illegal discharge of the firearm is personal to her. We did not even expect her to take such action … She will definitely face criminal and administrative sanctions,” the spokesperson said.

The Department of Health reported at least 50 fireworks-related injuries from December 21, 2020 to January 1, 2021. This is 85% less than the 340 total cases reported last year. He has yet to confirm all three cases of stray bullet incidents.
