The Golden State Warriors went 2-2 on their four-game season-opening road trip. Now, the Dubs will be back in the Bay Area for two weeks.
Golden State plays its next seven games at the Chase Center, with six of those matchups against teams that are considered serious playoff contenders. The Warriors began their season with games against two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference, the Brooklyn Nets and the Milwaukee Bucks.
The results weren’t pretty. The Dubs lost those games by an average of 32.5 points and did not appear to belong on the court with the two championship contenders. As head coach Steve Kerr pointed out, the team was able to turn a disastrous road trip into a good one by beating the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons. Two squads that are considered among the worst in the NBA.
Things will start to get a lot tougher for the Warriors, starting tonight when they host the Portland Trail Blazers.
Here’s what the Dubs’ schedule looks like on their seven-game home run.
December 31 vs. Trail Blazers
January 3 vs. Trail Blazers
January 4 vs. Sacramento Kings
January 6 vs. LA Clippers
January 8 vs. LA Clippers
January 10 vs. Toronto Raptors
January 12 vs. Indiana Pacers
Golden State looked much better the last two games and should continue to build on the chemistry. The roster hasn’t had much time to play with each other, and growing pains were expected early in the season.
The good news is that Draymond Green should come back from a foot injury sooner rather than later. It will help stabilize things on the defensive end, but the Warriors still have a lot of room for improvement when it comes to their rotations and communication.
James Wiseman and Damion Lee have given Kerr quality minutes in four games, which should give the head coach a deeper rotation to work with. Expectations for Wiseman were high, but the Warriors needed one of the other younger guys to step up and show they can play meaningful minutes. Lee has been the one who has stood out from that group.
Stephen Curry is getting back on track after missing basically the entirety of last season and should continue to improve as he regains his game form.
With Green’s return imminent, the Dubs will be in full force for the next several weeks, barring injuries. Andrew Wiggins had his best game in a Golden State uniform last time, while Kelly Oubre Jr. tries to get out of a shootout.
It will be a tough test for Kerr’s group for the next two weeks. We should have a clearer idea of where the Warriors rank in the NBC pecking order after this seven-game home stay.
