WASHINGTON DC: Cuba on Wednesday warned the outgoing US administration not to re-designate the island as a state sponsor of terrorism, a move that is reportedly under discussion and could hamper the diplomacy of President-elect Joe Biden. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is reviewing the possibility before leaving office on January 20 of returning Cuba to the blacklist, severely hampering foreign investment, said a person familiar with the situation. CNN, citing an unnamed senior administrative official, said Pompeo would make the appointment “in the next few days.” The New York Times first reported that the State Department had crafted the proposal, but said it was unclear whether Pompeo would approve it. “I denounce the maneuvers of the Sec of State Pompeo to include #Cuba in the list of state sponsors of terrorism to please the anti-Cuban minority in Florida.” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez wrote on Twitter. ?? # The US grants refuge and impunity to terrorist groups that act against Cuba from that territory? he said, in a family charge against Cuban-American anti-communist activists who deny having committed any crime. The discussion comes before the 60th anniversary, on January 3, of the breakdown of relations between the United States with the nearby island after Fidel Castro’s communist revolution.
