It’s time for the Golden State Warriors to face the stark truth
The Golden State Warriors will look like a completely different team once Draymond Green makes his long-awaited return.
Everyone knew that losing Klay Thompson would be a vital blow to the Golden State Warriors’ title hopes, but I don’t think enough is being said about how damaging it is to not have Draymond Green for the season opener.
The media has been quick to overreact to the Dubs’ struggles from the start. Back-to-back blowouts against two of the best teams in the league were enough for Twitter to start spinning the ‘Stephen Curry is washed away’ narrative, while even his last-second win over the Chicago Bulls didn’t do much to quell the train. of hate.
I admit, the losses on opening night and on Christmas Day were worrisome. However, anyone who has been paying any attention to this team for the past year and a half should have known that it would look like a disaster to start the season.
It’s not enough to say that the Warriors haven’t played NBA basketball consistently since last March; They haven’t really played as they normally did since the 2019 NBA Playoffs when injuries plagued their potential run to another title. It’s been so long since Curry has been healthy enough to lead the charge, and a nine-month hiatus plus a flurry of new faces on the roster should be all it takes to get this team off to a slow start.
Above all, however, Green’s absence has been the root of most of his problems. No, Green won’t solve his shooting issues, only Andrew Wiggins and Kelly Oubre Jr. can address that. But Green is one of the most versatile defenders in NBA history and an elite playmaker on the front court. His experience and presence will instantly elevate Dubs to a different level.
Simply having Green there to create plays for others will take some of the weight off Curry. It helps even more that Curry can play off the ball and use Green’s screens to find more open looks for himself.
On defense, Green will anchor the Warriors’ efforts. I have no doubt that Green will successfully channel everything into painting where James Wiseman can clean up and take care of the rest.
