MANILA – A “handful” of President Rodrigo Duterte’s security members were vaccinated against COVID-19 in September this year, the head of the Presidential Security Group said on Wednesday.

Colonel Jesús Durante refused to reveal how many PSG staff members were vaccinated, but said the men were always with the president. Nor did he confirm or deny whether he received the vaccine.

“We are soldiers so we have to take risks just to fulfill our mission. The bottom line here is that we have to fulfill our mission at all costs,” he told ANC Headstart.

During said that vaccinations began in September and the last batch was in October. Staff were vaccinated inside the compound, he said.

Duterte himself did not realize that his guards were receiving the vaccine until “a handful” of them were inoculated.

“We didn’t ask for permission. We just informed him about it after all the nearby staff were vaccinated. He was shocked,” said Durante.
