Grandmaster Wesley So of the United States came second behind World Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the preliminary round of the Airthings Masters on Monday night (Manila time).
They both have 6.5 points, but Carlsen was ahead on the tiebreaker tally.
Carlsen and six others then progressed to the quarter-final knockout round in which the former will face French GM Maxine Vachier-Lagrave, while the latter will face Russian Daniil Duvob.
The rest of the pairs are GM Teimour Radjabov of Azerbajian versus GM Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia, and American GM Hikaru Nakamura versus GM Levon Aronian of Armenia.
Game time is around 10pm on Tuesday (Manila time). That’s around 6 a.m. at So and Nakamura’s place in the United States.
The four GMs who were expelled were the Russian Alexander Grischuk, the Dutch Anish Giri, the Spanish David Anton Guijaro and Pentala Harikrisna, from India with a passion for chess.
The knockout round is similar to the Skilling Open won by So, where the pair will play two rounds. Ties will be decided by blitz and Armageddon.
Four successful players from each pairing will advance to the semi-finals that will be played in the same format.
The winner of this tournament will pocket a hefty sum of $ 60,000 in cash.
So using his gruesome tactics, he played an incredible game against Dubov whom he subdued in 35 moves from Ruy Lopez Moeller Defense.
Airthings Master is the first major Champions Chess Tour tournament culminating in September to determine the best online chess player in quick format, the most popular chess platform.
