Barangay Geneva head coach Tim Cone made it clear that he wants Greg Slaughter back as the Gin Kings aim to compete for more championships following their 2020 PBA Philippine Cup win.
That, however, may not happen anytime soon.
The 7-foot slot machine took to Instagram on Tuesday and revealed that the discussions between him and the top brass of San Miguel Corp., particularly with Pres. Ramon S. Ang and sporting director Alfrancis Chua, did not go his way.
“My only regret is that the communication between management and myself, in particular Boss RSA and coach Al Francis Chua, was not as smooth as I would have liked.” wrote in an extensive IG story.
The 32-year-old surprised many in February when he decided to take a break from basketball following the expiration of his contract. Then he went to the United States the following month.
Slaughter would stay there for several months, training with Gary Boyson at the DME Sports Facility in Florida in an effort to further develop his game. He finally returned to the country last September.
Slaughter explained that his decision to take a hiatus from the PBA “It was purely to improve myself both as a person and as a basketball player.” He also apologized if his actions were misinterpreted.
“I want to apologize to them and the rest of the management for any misunderstandings or bad feelings that may have occurred due to my decision.” he said no. 1 2013 Rookie Draft Pick.
Still, Slaughter has not given up hope that he might one day return to the Barangay, where he won four championships along with a Best Conference Player award and five All-Star honors.
“My only wish now for next year is to put that in the past and have the opportunity to dress again for the best fans in the world,” he wrote.
“I have learned a lot in the past year and am excited to show everyone that the next phase of my career will be the best yet.”
