Palawan ‘Queen’s Gambit’ WIM Mikee Suede: Life is Chess

MANILA, Philippines – When you grab something, things can unfold before your eyes.
For International Female Master Mikee Charlene Suede, learning to play chess and being so damn good – she’s an International Female Master, you know – is one of the best things that can happen to her.
When he was young, his father believed that obtaining educational insurance would help ensure his children a good education.
When scandals hit the insurance industry, he maneuvered in another direction: using his love of chess as a vehicle to teach his children and get them an education.
So he taught his three daughters to play and all three took to chess as if it were second nature.
“My father was able to achieve his goal of helping all of us get an education,” Mikee praised, but he also put us all on opposite sides of the board.
Mikee’s older sister competed for La Salle and they faced each other. Some of his cousins became teammates at the University of the Philippines, while his younger sister now competes for the University of Santo Tomas.
“One of life’s ironies,” Suede laughed, which is like a breath of fresh air with its seemingly inexhaustible supply of enthusiasm and good vibes.
“Chess is life. It’s connected to life, ”said Suede, who recently resigned as a chess coach at La Salle Zobel and La Salle Greenhills to work with the New York Academy of Chess, where she has been working for the past 11 months. “The game teaches you to think ahead; have a goal with a beginning, a middle and an end. And it makes you understand that every move you make has a consequence or an effect, so in life and in play you think of everything. “
Chess has been good for Suede that when he finished playing at UAAP, he dedicated himself to training and teaching, hoping to instill what his father taught him first and what the game has given him.
And that’s why he knows that the Palawan Queen’s Gambit team that will compete in the Philippine Professional Chess Association will change the rules of the game.
“Well, thoughtful idea,” he says. “I think my WIM colleagues will agree that we lose too many women in the game because after UAAP and the age group competition, there is nothing to look forward to, so they either get married or work. Now, they have something to look forward to that will bring opportunities and equality for women. “
Now think about what that will mean for the game here in the Philippines and for women in general.
“The options are many and good in my opinion,” summarized Suede. “Every movement has a consequence or an effect. And this can only be good. “
