The return of Charlotte Flair was not originally part of Lana’s story. The Queen made her return to WWE TLC to partner with Asuka.
WWE had long been running a story where Nia Jax would put Lana on a table every week. However, what seemed like a pointless joke soon became the central story of RAW’s women’s division with Lana ending up as the sole Survivor in Survivor Series.

The story seemed to be reaching its climax as Lana teamed up with Asuka and began week after week to improve Jax and Shayna Baszler. A tag title fight was set up and it looked like Lana would get her vindication by winning the championship.
Instead, however, she got injured and was replaced by a mystery partner at WWE TLC. He enters Charlotte and together with Asuka they dethrone Jax and Baszler to become the new tag team champions. However, this was not always the plan from the beginning.
Charlotte Flair’s return wasn’t originally part of Lana’s story
Charlotte is much better than Lana in the ring and many would have her on the stunning Russian at any moment. However, within this story, Lana was more important. Nia would finally get her due. However, the absence of his victim in the fight took some of the shine off the defeat.
Once the angle of the injury was announced, many saw Charlotte return. However, prior to that, “many members” on the list were left in the dark about Flair’s return according to Fightful Select. The report claimed that various people at WWE emphasized that Flair’s return was “not on the cards or considered” when WWE began to build the story of Lana and Nia Jax.
Lana’s story was modified to fit the Queen once she became available to them. One can only wonder how the original story was supposed to end, but it didn’t.
