Liverpool warned to avoid transfer of Timo Werner due to style of German striker

Liverpool have been warned that Timo Werner may not adapt to his attacking style.

The RB Leipzig leader has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield in the summer.

His 27 shots in this period demonstrate his appetite for goals, but former Red Dietmar Hamann is concerned about whether the German will prosper in Merseyside.

Werner has confessed his admiration for Jurgen Klopp, but Hamann believes the 24-year-old could easily be fought in England.

“I’m not quite sure,” he told Sky Sports when asked if he thought the Leipzig forward would be a worthy addition.

“He always expressed how fond he is of Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool and that he may want to join them, but the thing about Liverpool is that they probably have the best top three in world football.”

“If you play well in Liverpool, even though the runners like to overlap, Salah and Mane are very complicated players, they have many tricks, they are very skilled.”

“Timo Werner is not that type of player. His biggest advantage is his pace. And if I see games now even in Anfield, with Liverpool being so superior, all the teams sit down and if you deny Werner’s space I think it is a lot less effective

“Their record goal for Leipzig this season is outstanding, but they like to play on the counterattack. They are not really a possession team.”

“I don’t think he has the trick to play with, like Mane and Salah have.

“And if you look at Firmino’s position, the way they are set up, I think you need almost a Teddy Sheringham-type player like Firmino, because he ties things up, he never goes after the four players he likes. And put Salah , Well at stake.

“I just wouldn’t know where to play [Werner]. I don’t think he’s a broad player, I think he’s the best in between.

“On the other hand, there is the African Cup of Nations, if it goes ahead, early next year. So Mane and Salah could be out for 4-6 weeks.”

“That could be one thing on Liverpool’s mind, but I am sure there are players who could help Liverpool more than Timo Werner.”
