MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines’ internet speed in terms of fixed and mobile broadband has improved slightly, according to a global speed test.
According to Ookla’s Global Speedtest Index, the Philippines is ranked 110th out of 139 countries in terms of mobile data speed, averaging 18.49 megabits per second (Mbps) as of November 2020, compared to the record in November of 2019 of 17.15 Mbps.
The Philippines also slightly improved its ranking in terms of fixed broadband speed, ranking three places to 103rd out of 176 countries.
According to the index, the Philippines averaged 28.69 Mbps in terms of fixed broadband speed as of November 2020, which is slightly higher than the November 2019 record of 25.68 Mbps.
In terms of mobile internet speed, the UAE ranks first in Ookla’s global Speedtest index, with an average speed of 170.30 Mbps. Meanwhile, Singapore is the number one country in terms of fixed broadband speed, with an average of 241.10 Mbps.
In August, Ookla reported that the Philippines’ internet speed was returning to pre-pandemic levels.
For example, the average download speed for fixed broadband was 30.77 megabits per second (Mbps) and for mobile data, it was 16.68 Mbps on February 24. But after the enhanced community quarantine was placed in Luzon and other areas in March, it dropped to 20.40 Mbps for fixed broadband and 13.95 for mobile data.
Download speeds for 2020 were at their lowest from March 30 to April 6, when fixed broadband speeds were between 20.52 Mbps and 20.47 Mbps; and mobile data from 11.93 Mbps to 11.95 Mbps.
But Ookla’s records from July 13 showed that fixed broadband rose to 26.70 Mbps and mobile data to 17.24 Mbps.
