How to keep pets safe on vacation

MANILA – This Christmas, pet owners are reminded to consider the safety of their animal companions in their preparations, from food to decoration.

In a statement, the Pet Food Institute (PFI) shared tips on keeping pets safe while on vacation.

These include properly disposing of leftovers that may contain high levels of fat and sugar to prevent pets from consuming them, and carefully reading the labels on treats and checking with your veterinarian if they are safe to eat.

PFI particularly cited raw hides, which can cause choking and digestive obstruction in pets and can eventually lead to serious complications.

Christmas decorations, such as Christmas trees, should also be securely anchored to the floor to prevent pets from hitting them and sustaining serious injury.

Holiday lights should also be securely attached, with cords and wires hidden out of reach of your pets.

Established in 1958, PFI is considered the “voice of the American pet food industry,” representing the companies that make 98% of cat and dog food in the United States.
