MANILA, Philippines – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is calling on the public to stop criticizing the daughter of Police Sergeant Major Jonel Nuezca, emphasizing that the child is also a “victim.”

“The child is also a victim of this situation. We call on the public to refrain from using violent language and publishing your photos and personal information, ”UNICEF said in a statement Wednesday.

However, Unicef said “extreme online defamation” will only lead to “additional harm, trauma and stigma for the child.”

According to Unicef, all children “have the right to be supported through non-violent parenting practices and behaviors by adults so that they can grow up in a safe environment and reach their full potential.”

He explained that several studies have shown that child victims and witnesses of violence become vulnerable to physical and mental health problems, some of which will manifest themselves when they reach adulthood.

Viral videos of the incident showed the girl standing near her father during heated exchanges with Sonya Gregorio and her son Frank Anthony.

During the confrontation, the girl yelled at Sonya: “My father is a policeman.”

“I don’t care,” Gregorio yelled, enraging Nuezca, who drew his M-92 9mm service pistol and shot him point-blank in the head, then Frank Anthony twice. Before leaving with her daughter, Nuezca shot Sonya one more time as she lay on the ground.

Netizens have since blamed and shamed Nuecza’s daughter online, noting that the dispute escalated due to the boy’s teasing.

Sonya’s widower and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) have also appealed to the public to prevent the child from further vilification.

DSWD had already promised to provide psychosocial support for the boy and other witnesses to the crime, which Unicef recommended.

UNICEF also urged the Philippine government and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to immediately adopt and implement the PNP’s child protection policy, which will reinforce zero tolerance for any act of violence against children and guarantee special protection. of children against all forms of abuse and exploitation by providing policies and guidelines to be followed by all PNP personnel.
