MANILA – The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has begun accepting applications from those who wish to enter their rookie draft on March 14.
As of Tuesday, six applicants made their intentions public.
Three of them, Jason Brickman, Jeremiah Gray and Brandon Rosser, came from just one club last season for professional basketball, the Asean Basketball League (ABL) team, Alab Pilipinas.
These players were key contributors to Alab during the 2019-20 season before the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic forced its cancellation.
Brickman arguably has the best résumé among Alab’s stars, ranking fourth on the U.S. National College Athletics Association (NCAA) list of all-time assists.
The former Long Island University-Brooklyn star, who won an ABL title with Kuala Lumpur alongside current Phoenix star Matt Wright, was among the attendance leaders at the ABL before its total cancellation at 9.1 dimes per game.
On the other hand, with their advantages, Gray and Rosser could present themselves as interesting prospects for teams looking to shore up their forward rotations.
Another high-profile player who put his name in the draft is Andre Paras.
Benjie’s eldest son, the PBA legend, is actually an intriguing prospect as he had a very short post-secondary career.
After starring in La Salle Greenhills in the NCAA youth division, Paras had a unique season with the University of the Philippines in the Philippine University Athletic Association.
Surprisingly, he moved to San Beda after his UP stint, but never managed to join the Red Lions for the 2014 NCAA season.
The actor and TV host finally got to play club basketball after a long hiatus for AMA in the PBA D-League in 2017 and with Imus in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League for the 2018-19 season.
Two more guards, Matthew Sánchez and Shem Magallanes, also requested the draft.
Rookie applicants have until January 27 to submit their preliminary applications. (PNA)
