Manila: Floods and landslides caused by a tropical depression that struck many areas in the Philippines over the weekend have left at least eight people dead, two injured and one missing, authorities said Monday.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) of the Philippines, the victims were recorded in the Eastern Visayas region, the Davao region and the Caraga region.

The NDRRMC said the tropical depression affected more than 36,000 residents in the central and southern Philippines and caused 110.4 million pesos ($ 23 million) of infrastructure damage.

The tropical depression left the Philippines on Sunday, according to the state meteorological office.

The country’s 22nd storm continues to move away from the Philippines, with maximum sustained winds of 65 km per hour with gusts of up to 80 km per hour, the state meteorological office said.

Disaster prone

Typhoons and tropical storms regularly hit the Philippines from June through December, claiming lives and causing billions of dollars in damage.

Located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is among the countries most prone to disasters, including active volcanoes, frequent earthquakes and an average of 20 typhoons a year, which cause floods and landslides.

Government data showed that the Philippines had lost 463 billion pesos (US $ 9.65 billion) in damage from natural disasters between 2010 and 2019.
