Almost 6,000 evacuated amid floods in Cagayán, Isabela

Almost 6,000 people were evacuated due to flooding in Isabela and Cagayan due to heavy rains, rivers overflowed and the Magat dam released water, according to a report by GMA News correspondent Bill Visaya in Unang Balita on Monday.

The Regional Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management said that, so far, 5,912 people or 1,467 families have been evacuated in the two provinces.

In Isabela, nearly 3,000 people or 700 families were evacuated while 68 barangays remained flooded.

The affected towns are Sta. Maria, Benito Soliven, San Mariano, San Pablo, Ilagan, Cabagan, Cordon, Tumauini, Cauayan City, Mallig, Delfin Albano, San Isidro and Quezon.

Evacuees in Cabagan received assistance Sunday night.

The Divisoria Bridge in San Pablo was flooded and was only passable for large trucks. The bridge connects Isabela with Cagayan.

Nine bridges were flooded in Isabela. There were also flooded bridges in Cagayan.

On Monday morning, floods are beginning to subside in Isabela, but are expected to descend to Cagayan.

At 3 a.m. Monday, five gates of the Magat dam remained open, according to the National Irrigation Administration-Magat River Irrigation System (MARIIS).

The water level of the dam in its reservoir was at 191.05 meters at the time, just a few meters from its spill level of 193 meters.

Meanwhile, at 3 am, the water level of the Buntun Bridge at the Buntun Bridge in Cagayan was at 11.57 meters, which is at the critical level. He reached 11.66 meters on Sunday night. —KG, GMA News
