MANILA, Philippines – Seven people were killed and one injured after tropical depression Vicky caused flooding mainly in areas of Mindanao, data from the Philippine National Police (PNP) showed on Sunday.
In a situation report, the PNP’s Office of Public Information said two deaths were from Eastern Visayas, while five deaths were reported in the Caraga region.
In a separate message, PNP spokesman Police Brigadier General Ildebrandi Usana said that six out of seven deaths were drowning incidents. The remaining victim died in a car accident due to a landslide, Usana said.
Meanwhile, four people were reported missing from the Mindanao areas. Two missing persons were in the Davao region while two others were in Caraga.
Police said there were 853 people housed in evacuation centers in Mindanao. Of these, 177 are in relief centers in Davao, while 676 live in temporary shelters in Caraga.
Over the weekend, Vicky, which was rated the worst weather disturbance since 2014, triggered flooding and landslides that affected thousands of Mindanao residents.
Vicky is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility this Sunday afternoon. [ac]
