MANILA – The operator of the Magat dam opened 4 floodgates on Sunday when the water reached an almost critical level due to persistent rains caused by three climatic changes, PAGASA said.
Rains caused by Tropical Depression Vicky, easterly winds and the end of a frontal system or the boundary between the easterly winds and the northeast monsoon (amihan) had flooded northern Luzon over the weekend.
At 9 am, Magat Dam has 4 gates open at 8 meters each. He opened 6 doors at 12 meters each early Sunday.
Some 96 families or 350 people have fled their homes in Barangay Annafunan East, Tuguegarao City, according to Sangguniang Kabataan President Gerald Valdez.
About 250 houses were submerged in 10-foot-high floods, he said.
Some 40 barangays in the city of Ilagan, Isabela, were also flooded with 2 isolated villages, according to the local disaster office. Mayor Jay Díaz ordered the evacuation of the affected residents.
The city’s information officer, Paul Bacungan, said there are 153 families (632 people) currently in evacuation centers, while another 28 families (98 people) are staying with their relatives or tents on the side of the roads.
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said the flooding in his home province was “still manageable.”
“We are flooding here in Isabela,” he told ABS-CBN’s TeleRadyo. “The flood is still under control here.”
(We are again submerged in the floods here in Isabela. It is still under control until now).
