Landslide kills 2 in Leyte

TWO people died after a landslide struck Barangay Cuatro de Agosto in Mahaplag, Leyte, early Saturday morning, December 19, 2020.

In a report from the Regional Police Office (PRO) -Eastern Visayas Headquarters, the victims were identified as 67-year-old widow Evelina Laraño and 62-year-old housewife Juvilinda Milana.

Authorities also rescued 14-year-old Ryan Amos and one Godofredo Laraño Jr.

Meanwhile, the region’s Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) declared the total closure of the southern Tacloban-Baybay highway along Barangay Cuatro De Agosto due to a roadblock caused by incessant rains from the tropical depression. Vicky.

According to the DPWH, the traveling public can use the alternative route Palo-Carigara-Ormoc.

Beginning Saturday afternoon, field staff from the Southern Leyte District Office of Engineering carried out maintenance activities, including clearing downed trees, removing drain plugs, and dewatering flooded areas. .

DPWH said the Marabong bridge along the Burauen-La Paz highway at Barangay Moging in Burauen, Leyte is passable only for light vehicles “due to the worn slope protection on the left side of the abutment.”

Field personnel also installed temporary barricades and safety cones while managing traffic and continuously monitoring the condition of the bridge.

In Southern Leyte, a landslide was reported on the road along Barangay Tubod in Silago.

As of Saturday morning, only one lane was passable in that area.
