Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 18) – E-sports and break, or breakdance, will debut as medal sports at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), the highest governing body for sport on the continent, announced the inclusion of the two sports in the XIX Asiad on Friday.

“I hope that esports will add value to the Asian Games and I am confident that they will do so in the future, during the 2022 Asian Games and even beyond,” said OCA Asian Games Director Haider Farman.

The OCA said that six e-sports medal events will be played in Hangzhou, where the Asian E-Sports Federation will handle all technical issues and operations for the competition.

E-sports first appeared as an official medal sport at the 2007 Asian Indoor Games in Macau, and as a demonstration event at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.

Esports also made their debut at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, hosted by the Philippines, which featured seven events: Dota 2, Starcraft II, Hearthstone, Pro Evolution Soccer, Tekken 7, Arena of Valor, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The host country led the competition with three golds, one silver and one bronze.

Breaking will also make its Asian Games debut with two events. It will then join the Summer Olympics for the first time in Paris, France, in 2024.

The XIX Asian Games will be held from September 10 to 25, 2022 and will feature 40 sports, 61 disciplines and 482 events.
