JAKARTA (Indonesia) – Indonesia has been confirmed to host the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 by the FIBA Regional Office in Asia on Friday.
This will be the second time in history that Indonesia has hosted this main event. The last time the FIBA Asia Cup was held in Indonesia was in 1993 when China beat Korea DPR in the final to clinch its ninth continental crown.
The Final Round of the continental competition will take place from August 16-28, 2021 and will feature the best 16 teams from Asia / Oceania.
“We are very proud to host the FIBA Asia Cup in Jakarta next year, it is an excellent platform for Indonesia to showcase its basketball potential. It will also help us prepare for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, as well as organizer as a national team, “said the Indonesian Basketball Federation, PERBASI, President Danny Kosasih.
Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world, is also one of the co-hosts of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 along with Japan and the Philippines. Unlike their co-hosts, who obtained direct qualification, Indonesia must be among the top eight teams in the 2021 FIBA Cup Asia to receive a direct qualification spot.
FIBA Asia President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani said: “It will be an exciting couple of years for Indonesian basketball. Hosting the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 and co-hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup. 2023 is a great step towards the development of basketball in the country. “
As hosts of the FIBA Asia Cup 2021, Indonesia is now classified as one of 16 teams that will play in the event. They join Lebanon and Bahrain as teams that have already secured their places in the competition.
The 2021 FIBA Asia Cup teams will be divided into four groups of four teams each. The best teams in each group at the end of the group stage will qualify directly for the quarter-finals. However, the second and third place teams in each group will have to play in a qualifying game to earn their places in the remaining four places in the quarterfinals.
