MANILA – San Miguel Corp. on Thursday expressed interest in operating and maintaining the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and submitted an offer.

SMC President and COO Ramon Ang told ABS-CBN News that his company will only commit to handling the operations and maintenance of the main entrance to the Philippines, not its planned rehabilitation.

The rehabilitation of NAIA was delayed again after the agency in charge of the airport revoked the original proponent (OPS) status of a Philippine-Indian consortium in the tender for the project.

An OPS allows the bidder to match the counter offer submitted by the competitors and thereby package a project.

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) sent a letter dated December 15 to Megawide informing the company that its status as the original proponent of the project had been revoked.

Meanwhile, Megawide criticized the MIAA move, saying the rehab was “further delayed by corrupt vested interests who have spent millions trying to bring down the only capable and qualified player.”

The Philippine-Indian consortium said it will immediately file a motion to reconsider its proposal, emphasizing that it has met all the government’s requirements and interpretations.
