MANILA, Philippines – Eumir Marcial just made a dominant pro debut after beating Andrew Whitfield in four rounds, but he’s not looking to take it easy anytime soon.

Marcial, who is also training for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, said that MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons advised him to take a break after his professional debut, but that he would prefer to get back in the gym as soon as possible.

“Sir Sean told me if I would like to take a vacation first, but I told him the most I would do is take a break for a week and then go train,” Marcial said in Filipino on Thursday after his unanimous decision. victory. “I need to gain more experience to have better chances when I get to the Olympics.”

Marcial has said that fighting professionally would be his way of preparing for the Summer Games, where he is projected as the Philippines’ first gold medal winner.

At 5ft 8in, middleweight Marcial is one of the largest boxers in the Philippines considering that Manny Pacquiao, who is 5ft6in, is the country’s heaviest champion when he became the WBC super welterweight world champion in 2010 after beating Antonio Margario.

Despite his dominating performance, Marcial said that preparing for his first professional fight was not as easy as it sounds.

“I was not able to train for a long time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I struggled to get proper conditioning,” said Marcial. “Well at least my opponent didn’t fight me and lay down.”

“Getting training partners is also crucial because the last two weeks I was not training, since those who want to train with me wanted to be paid first.”

However, Marcial went to work and brutalized Whitfield, closing the American’s left eye in the second round and landing 120 punches to his opponent’s 46 to get 40-36 scores from all three judges.
