MANILA, Philippines – Twelve cities in Metro Manila reported a reproductive number greater than one, meaning that more people can contract the virus from a single COVID-19-infected patient, the Department of Health (DOH) said Wednesday. .
“In the R-nught (R0) or reproductive number, there are four more [na cities], so labing dalawa lahat na can R-naut na greater than one, ”said Health Secretary Francisco Duque III during an online press conference of the Department of Health, explaining the rate of reproduction of COVID-19 infections in Metro Manila. The R0 measures the rate of disease transmission in the community.

Apart from the 12 cities, the Undersecretary of Health, María Rosario Vergeire, said that they are still monitoring other cities in the National Capital Region because there was no progress in reducing COVID-19 cases.
“Although, not to say that we are not monitoring all of Metro Manila because we are also seeing a case of stagnation in the other cities. That is, Hindi na sila nagtuloy nang pagbaba and this is a warning sign for us to start focusing and have strict monitoring between the cities of Metro Manila, ”Vergeire said at the same online press conference.
DOH, however, has yet to specify cities with a high rate of reproduction of severe respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2.
As of Tuesday, the DOH reported a total of 451,839 COVID-19 patients nationwide. Of that number, 418,867 patients recovered while 8,812 died.
