The end of season 19 of The voice shouldn’t have had suspense. Like, not at all. Based on your enthusiastic support for Carter Rubin, the young winner of the Gwen Stefani team, in the polls that have followed our summaries, had the victory in the bag. A pretty one, even with tissue paper and a bow.
But, as we well know, TVLine poll results do not necessarily reflect the preferences of NBC’s audience as a whole. We also can’t underestimate the Blake Shelton effect, whereby a contestant jumps to the front of the pack in large part just because of their coach’s enormous popularity.
So what really happened? Did the viewers decide that the child was (more than) okay? Did Blake’s cowboys split the nation’s vote, setting the stage for Team Kelly Clarkson’s DeSz or Team John Legend’s John Holiday to pull off a surprise? Before we knew it, of course, we had a lot of performances to get through. They went something like this …
The Top 20, “Rockin ‘Around the Christmas Tree” | As cute as it was, this pre-recorded segment mostly made me miss the contestants who had already been eliminated (Ben Allen, Sid Kingsley) or expelled (Ryan Gallagher) and reminded me how good Cami Clune sounded when the producers they had time to sweeten it. voice.
Nelly with Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line, “Lil Bit” | Before this performance, I would have said that I wasn’t good enough or with that that I liked Nelly. But this was as catchy as hell and as tight as the belt that the superstar did not use to fasten his pants.
Lewis Capaldi, “Before You Go” | Dammit. This boy is like a perfect singer, isn’t it? It also makes you come back and appreciate the excellence of Carter Rubin’s Blind Audition with this heartthrob, doesn’t it? (If you want, you can watch it again below.) Powerful, precise, magnificent.
24KGoldn with Iann Dior, “Mood” | Hmm … so this is a huge hit, huh? It’s catchy I guess, but pretty monotonous. Like listening to a metronome making its best impression Milli Vanilli. Even the shaking camera effects couldn’t bring it to life.
Duet with the coach
DeSz and Kelly Clarkson, “I Am All Women” – DeSz Rating: A | Ooo … from the first note, I thought, “Why didn’t DeSz sing this one during the competition? “It was as snug as the velvet gloves she wore during her performance. At one point, her crying even reached the heights of Martha Wash in her Black Box days.
Lauren Daigle, “You Say” | Wow, Lauren’s rendition of her Christian topper was so beautiful and so powerful, it was like a little piece of heaven inserted right into your ears. Maelyn Jarmon from season 16 kill this song.
Jason Derulo, “Take a dance / Wild love” | Whoops! You have a green screen setup in your home. That, or whoa, is sure You are going to win your neighborhood Christmas lights display contest. But how did he perform confidently in the midst of that crowd of dancers? Was it CGI? Are they a pod? In any case, this mini-potpourri was more attractive than anything you hang your coat from. Extreme fun.
Duet with the coach
John Holiday and John Legend, “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” – Holiday Rating: B | Before his performance, Coach Legend described it as a “Christmas hug.” Although rather melancholic. It was also interesting to hear the Johns sing together, because it underscored a problem with Holiday that he had never been able to identify before: while Legend sounded completely natural, Holiday was affected, as if he was always trying to show off. Great singer, but forced.
Dan + Shay, “Take me home for Christmas” | OK, this was harmonious and delicious and all, and gave me a hint of the fact that Shay was a guy but mostly he was worried about … well I couldn’t tell you which one it was, but any of them had curls as lush as metalheads, it looked like it would make a Quiet Riot cover perfectly competent.
Duet with the coach
Ian Flanigan and Blake Shelton, “Moms Don’t Let Their Babies Become Cowboys” – Ian’s Rating: B- | Before this performance, Blake joked that the booming of Ian’s voice would make him feel less of a man. And boy Ian did rumbled like a storm. But overall, the number was like a note, not unpleasant but not terribly memorable, and it was definitely not playing to the contestant’s strengths.
Duet with the coach
Jim Ranger and Blake Shelton, “Streets of Bakersfield” – Jim’s Rating: C | With my hand on the remote, when this song started, I could have sworn Jim and his coach were singing “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” It’s a wacky song, right? Anyway, as with Ian’s duo, it didn’t play to Jim’s strengths. It was fun and allowed him to show his personality, but not the mischievous or cute qualities that had made him so outstanding.
JP Saxe with Julia Michaels, “If the World Was Ending” | JP, it seems, is a master of spoken song; made it sound super easy (and emotional at the same time), while when Julia joined him, his voice seemed more breathy and husky. Regardless, they sounded lovely together, elegant and understated.
Duet with the coach
Carter Rubin and Gwen Stefani, “You Make It Feel Like Christmas” – Carter’s Rating: A + | Adorably, Carter teamed up with his coach on their duet with his boo. And I hate falling into cheesy stuff, but come on, I’m only human. This was damn precious. And on top of that, Carter sounded like the standout in every Christmas choir you’ve ever heard. Charming.
Keith Urban and Pink, “One Too Many” | Heck, you can see why these two were put on last. Few are the performers who could come close to its level of perfection. And the song was so beautiful that it made me wish iTunes was still around so I could download it. (It’s also worth noting: pink on a projector is still more attractive than most artists in person.)
And in the moment (s) of truth …

DeSz (Team Kelly)
