‘Pose’ star Indya Moore just released ‘TranSanta’ to send gifts to transgender youth

(CNN) – Indya Moore wants to help ensure that all children receive a gift this year.

The 25-year-old “Pose” actor launched TranSanta, an initiative that allows users to anonymously give gifts to trans children and young adults in need.

“Unfortunately, trans issues don’t get much visibility or attention, but this year has been the most violent and deadly for my community,” wrote Moore, who is non-binary and uses his / her pronouns, on Instagram. “It has been very disturbing.”

Moore explains how they came up with the idea for TranSanta with his friend Chase Strangio, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union. The duo enlisted the help of Kyle Lasky and Pidgeon Pagonis.

“I didn’t have a fireplace growing up in the Bronx or in foster care, but now I have my community,” Moore said in an Instagram video. “My friends and I want to make sure that trans kids feel like a gift to this world because they are. Acceptance and love are gifts we all deserve all year long.”

On the Instagram page that accompanies TranSanta, users can read letters sent by nearly 200 children. Users can then select a child to take to a Target registry with their wish list. There’s a 15-year-old in Tennessee asking for a cozy color-block sweater, while an 8-year-old in California asks for a tablet pen. Other requests for gifts range from a basketball to a rice cooker.

LGBTQ youth are estimated to make up 40% of the homeless youth population in the United States, despite representing 7% of the overall youth population, according to True Colors United.

Another 92% of transgender adults who have attempted suicide did so before age 25, according to a 2015 report from the National Center for Transgender Equality.

Earlier this year, Moore raised $ 20,000 for pandemic relief for 400 LGBTQ people of color.
