MANILA, Philippines – Megawide Construction Corp. and its partner, GMR Infrastructure, the world’s fourth-largest airport operator, have met the capital requirement set by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) for their proposal to rehabilitate the International Airport Ninoy Aquino (NAIA). ).
The 14,000 jobs at NAIA will also be insured.
Edgar Saavedra, president and CEO of Megawide, made these assurances in a statement issued Saturday.
Megawide received original proponent status in July 2020 after two years of negotiations with former proponents failed, Saavedra said.
Having received an encouraging letter from the Office of the President last November, Megawide and GMR said they had no plans to give up their proposed vision for the aging of the NAIA, especially since they had secured the necessary funds worth $ 2.3 billion.
Saavedra cited part of the letter that President Rodrigo Duterte sent to Megawide and GMR in the framework of the sixth anniversary of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.
“His impressive work in the development and operation of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport firmly affirms how dynamic relationships between the public and private sectors can lead to successful businesses that benefit our people,” said Duterte.
Megawide was responsible for the recent construction of the new passenger terminal building at Clark International Airport and the now acclaimed Mactan-Cebu International Airport.
As lockdown restrictions are constantly changing, the Philippines has been seeking new avenues to attract investment and rebuild tourism business and confidence as 2021 approaches.
In the same letter, Duterte said that Megawide should be inspired “to explore and pursue more innovative solutions to boost our tourism and transportation industries, even amid the challenges of COVID-19.”
Finding such solutions, the president added, “will make travel opportunities more fun and safer for everyone.”
The NAIA, formerly known as Manila International Airport, which first opened in 1948, has undergone various repairs and renovations over the years, but the Megawide-GMR proposal is so far the most innovative and visionary for the airport.
Megawide and GMR assured that within the first six months of operations, travelers will begin to experience a transformed NAIA.
