MANILA, Philippines – More than 100 colleagues and attorneys said the impeachment lawsuit filed against Deputy Supreme Court Justice Marvic Leonen was “unfounded and unfounded,” as they supported the judicial official.
“Knowing associate judge Marvic MVF Leonen as we do, from our personal, academic and professional work and relationships with him, we denounce the complaint of impeachment against him,” reads the statement entitled “Statement of support for Judge Marvic Leonen ”issued by Leonen’s co-workers and friends.
“The complaint is totally unfounded and unfounded, and should not be given due course. The complaint constitutes a direct attack on the independence and integrity of the Supreme Court of the Philippines ”, he added.

Leonen’s colleagues said they worked with him from the 1980s to the 2000s to defend the human rights and ancestral domains of farmers and indigenous communities across the country.
“We witnessed Judge Leonen’s idealism, probity, deep integrity, high professional work ethic and love for the law as an instrument of justice rather than oppression,” the statement read.
“Judge Leonen remains a visionary leader, deeply committed to helping the marginalized, oppressed and unrepresented. He inspired us to maximize and utilize our potential to serve the local Filipino communities, to help them find their voice, ”he further said.
The impeachment complaint filed against Leonen alleged that he lacked integrity by failing to file asset, liability and equity (SALN) returns for 15 years, citing a newspaper column.
The impeachment case was brought by Edwin Cordevilla of the Philippine League of Good Government Defenders. Cordevilla assisted by the lawyer Larry Gadon, who also presented the controversial impeachment against the former president of the Supreme Court of Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
