Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 9) – The local government of San Juan, Batangas ordered the closure of a resort after videos showed a mass gathering, with participants violating COVID-19 restrictions.
Memorandum Order 63 s.2020 signed by Mayor Ildebrando Salud said that due to repeated violation of IATF protocols, Blue Coral Beach Resort’s business permit is “canceled / revoked”.
Photos shared by the local government of San Juan showed a sign with the word “closed” posted on the resort’s door and on a wall with its logo.
In a briefing on Thursday, the Department of Tourism said a show of cause order was issued to the complex, located in Barangay Laiya.
“We received a video from a concerned citizen … about that mass gathering no mask, no face shield. I think yung naka mask on mask it’s just him Yacht security ”, said the Secretary of Tourism, Berna Rómulo Puyat.
[Translation: We got a video from a concerned citizen…about that mass gathering where nobody was wearing masks or face shields. I think the only people wearing masks and shields were security personnel.]The order to show cause was issued the day after the videos were viewed, he said, but the local San Juan government immediately issued a resolution revoking Blue Coral Beach Resorts, Inc.’s business permit.
Puyat added that they could only go after the establishment, and all concerns regarding guests rested with the resort.
In a separate statement, the DOT said it condemns what it calls a reckless social gathering.
“The aforementioned mass meeting, documented on video by concerned people, shows a large group of people partying without masks, face shields or observance of physical distancing protocols on the beach of said spa, which violates the guidelines established by the Interagency Working Group on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) for areas under General Community Quarantine (GCQ), “the statement said.
It added that the complex’s operations were previously suspended from September 2-17, 2020, “following the violation of IATF-EID health protocols.”
The complex has yet to release a statement.
