WITH a win last Sunday night, Geneva is now on the verge of winning the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup. A championship they are eager to win not only because it has been 13 years since they last captured this coveted title, but perhaps also, in some way, to silence the doubters and haters who say “asa kay Brownlee”.
The league’s most popular team has won a championship at an import-laden conference once a year since the 2015-2016 season when Justin Brownlee starred in a dramatic finale like a Game 6 movie, sinking the game-winning buzzer, beating out three. point to give Geneva and its legion of fans their first championship in eight years. It was a basket that put an end to the “KangKong” tag that fans of Pinoy rings often throw at the team for years. But little did they know that it was also the birth of a new trash talk in town towards Barangay, the “asa kay Brownlee” team.
Brownlee has been the Hercules in each of the last four Geneva Championships, three in the Governor’s Cup and one in the Commissioner’s Cup, it was a kind of heroism that bullies turned into slander while Geneva continues to fall short in the Cup of Philippines But now, in a unique bubble configuration, Geneva is finally about to smile back at these folks with a championship at an All-Filipino conference. With LA Tenorio’s masterful play and endgame composure, Japeth Aguilar’s inner presence, Stanley Pringle and Scottie Thompson’s scoring explosion filling up the stat sheet, every troll’s “silencer” is about to be fired, and finally, Guinevere is about to win. a championship without import.

On the other side of the coin, TNT Tropang Giga will continue to find answers and search for the missing item they have been looking for for five years, as once again they will probably not make it to a championship.
Some people even poked fun at the MVP group’s flagship franchise and labeled them “Intro-boys” as every year at one point the team looked so powerful and almost unbeatable, but in the end they didn’t win it all. However, to be fair, fate has not been too friendly with TNT during the playoffs, as they will have issues with their importation or lose a key player down the stretch most of the time.

Unfortunately, just like in recent years, they are now just steps away from another “bawi next season” line. And a depressing finish to a conference isn’t that far off, as they are down 1-3 in the series while losing two key players to injuries. Solid supporters may have to shed another tear as the heartbreak of losing again after being immaculate at the start of the conference is now imminent.
The series is not over yet, but all odds and fortune point to a championship for Barangay Geneva and another runner-up for TNT Tropang Giga. But who knows? Perhaps a miracle of biblical proportions is about to happen. Of course, it is 2020, a year in which many impossibilities came true.
