President Rodrigo Duterte called on Filipinos to eliminate holidays and celebrations during the holidays to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.
In a televised meeting Monday night, the president apologized for the government-imposed restrictions.
“Ngayon pa lang, we regret that there is a reduction in so many things that you are used to during the Christmas season (there will be a reduction in so many things that you are used to during the Christmas season),” he said.
Duterte called on the public to skip the “festivities” so they are protected from Covid-19.
“So, so many parties, almost in your adulthood and youth, you had parties every Christmas. Would you be so kind as to skip the festivities, iwasan na muna ninyo (avoid it)? You avoid it because it is for your own good and for the good of the community and eventually for the good of the country, ”he said.
Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said that the mayors of Metro Manila agreed to ban Christmas parties, gatherings and carols this Christmas season.
