Philippine Super League in a troubled year

The Philippine Super League (PSL) has a very hectic year after a year of being on the sidelines due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

PSL President Philip Ella Juico revealed that they already have a calendar for 2021, which strikes a balance between helping develop the sport at the grassroots level and supporting the national team.

While three teams, namely Petron, Generika-Ayala and Marinerang Pilipina, have been absent from the competition due to the global pandemic, the league’s team roster remains a competitive bunch with Petro Gazz entering the fold alongside the pillars F2 Logistics, Cignal, PLDT Home Fibr, Cherry Trigo and Sta. Lucía. Two more teams have also sent sensors that they would join.

“We promise to be back with a bang,” Juico said.

Juico revealed that the league would open the 2021 season with the PSL Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup in Subic Bay from February 25-27, 2021. This event was supposed to take place from November 28-30, but was postponed due to to the alterations of the climate devastated the country.

It would soon be followed by the All-Filipino Conference on March 13 before the players compete in the Asian Volleyball Confederation Asian Women’s Club Championship on April 11-18 in Taipei.

“While we seek to achieve a high level of club competition, we also know that sending a solid team to the international arena is our responsibility as an active member of the national federation: Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. That is why for next year we want have a balanced mix of club, international and collegiate competitions, ”shared juico.

The All-Filipino tournament will be followed by the Collegiate Grand Slam from July 10 to August 14 before the league closes its season with the Grand Prix, a tournament that will see teams play with an import.

Juico commented that they would coordinate with the Interagency Working Group on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) to obtain the green light for the next season. (JNP)
