Russia reported 28,782 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, the most cases it has ever reported in a single day, according to data from the country’s coronavirus response center.

The total number of coronavirus cases in Russia as of December 5 is 2,431,731.

The country reported 508 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the official total number to 42,684.

The methods of counting deaths from Covid-19 in Russia have been questioned by observers and independent demographers, with CNN previously reported that the figures could be greatly underestimated.

About vaccines: Moscow vaccination centers began distributing Russia’s Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine on Saturday.

The vaccine, developed by Russian scientists, has not yet completed Phase 3 of human trials.

“Civil vaccination started today at 70 points in Moscow. We work from 8 am to 8 pm, seven days a week,” Natalya Nikolaevna Kuzenkova, chief physician at Moscow Hospital 68, told CNN.

“Since our hospital participated in post-registration trials, this vaccine is not new to us. We have vaccinated quite a large number of the population during these studies, and all of our doctors and nurses know how to work with this vaccine,” she said.
