When Anthony Davis arrived with the Los Angeles Lakers during the summer of 2019, one of the ways his new teammate, LeBron James, tried to make him feel welcome was by giving him his number 23 jersey to wear. Davis had previously only worn No. 23 in the NBA, and the plan was for James to switch to No. 6, the number he uses in practice and that he wears with the Miami Heat.
James even presented Davis with the shirt in a parking lot, evidently outside a store where he had it personalized, or something like this:
There was just one problem: Nike had already made too many No. 23 jerseys with James’s name on it. He and Davis missed the trade deadline, so Davis wore number 3, originally planning for them to switch the following season.
However, it appears that the number 3 grew in Davis, as according to a team spokesperson, he will not change the jersey numbers this year. He will keep the only number he used for purple and gold, and the number he used in high school, when he begins his new five-year contract in Los Angeles.
So if you were hoping to get a Davis shirt to make sure a) stayed with the Lakers and second) I wasn’t going to change you numbers, you can go ahead and get one now without fear. Can I recommend the new retro jerseys that you just confirmed today? That number 3 looks amazing in white and blue, and it will remain in those colors, as well as purple and gold, for the foreseeable future.
