MANILA, Philippines – At least two vaccines for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be used initially during solidarity trials that could begin in January next year, said the head of vaccine development at the Department of Science and Technology. (DOST). expert panel said Friday.

Dr. Nina Gloriani, however, refused to identify the two vaccines that could be prioritized in solidarity trials supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), DOST, and the Department of Health (DOH).

“I am a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the WHO and we have not presented the prioritized vaccines for this solidarity [trials]. But we will meet again tonight, so we hope that the final list will be final soon, ”he said at a media forum organized by DOH.

“I think there will be at least two vaccines that will be tested initially, and that makes perhaps the possible start of solidarity vaccine trials here in the Philippines in early to mid-January. It also gives us more time to prepare very well for the actual implementation, ”he added.

Gloriani said the two vaccines being looked at for solidarity trials are already “on the radar” of the DOST panel, so the evaluation won’t take too long.

“I cannot say that at the moment. Until it’s made official, it can’t be said. But we are on the radar. This means that we have studied well, so it will not take long to evaluate, “he said when asked to identify the two vaccines.

(I can’t say that at this point. Until it’s made official, I can’t identify these vaccines. But they’re already on the radar. It means we’ve already studied it, so we’re not going to take too long in the evaluation.)

According to Gloriani, the laboratory requirements for solidarity testing, such as cold chain requirements, quality assurance of reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction testing, blood sample collection, preservation, storage, laboratory supplies, including personal protective equipment, are currently being completed.

He added that community engagements have already begun with local government units at potential sites for solidarity trials.
