MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte accepted the credentials of new ambassadors from Russia, India and five other countries on Wednesday during a virtual ceremony in Malacañang.
Accepting the credential letter from Russian Ambassador Marat Ignatyevich Pavlov, Duterte, speaking from Malago Club House, said that the Philippines considered Russia “a good friend and partner”, having strengthened cooperation over the years in defense and security, health , Science and Technology. and economy.
“Our goal is even stronger and deeper cooperation in the coming years,” the president told Pavlov.
He also thanked Russia for its offer to supply the Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19 and share technology on vaccine production with the Philippines.
“I am confident that our collaboration in the possible distribution and manufacture of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine in the Philippines will contribute greatly to the continued development of friendly and constructive relations between [our countries]”Pavlov said.
Another invitation
Duterte reiterated his invitation for Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit the Philippines as soon as circumstances permit, as the two countries mark their 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year.
In welcoming Indian Ambassador Shambhu Kumaran, Duterte highlighted the long-standing ties between Manila and New Delhi, adding that the relationship has been gaining further momentum due to synergies between his administration’s independent foreign policy and the “Politics Act East “from India.
The president said he hoped to honor Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who invited him to visit India, including as they plan a virtual summit.
“The Philippines is committed to further enhancing cooperation with India in defense, security, trade and investment, and in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic,” Duterte told Kumaran.
Kumaran said that India will work with the Philippines to ensure a stable and progressive Indo-Pacific region by enhancing cooperation in maritime defense and security, space science, digital economy and response to a pandemic.
The other ambassadors who presented their credentials virtually were Claudio Alberto Rojas Rachel from Chile, Dr. Titanilla Tóth from Hungary, Dr. Imtiaz Ahmad Kazi from Pakistan, Juha Markus Pyykkö from Finland, and Ahmed Shehabeldin Ibrahim Abdullah from Egypt.
Duterte expressed hope for stronger cooperation with the countries they represent in the areas of trade, education, counterterrorism and healthcare.
In particular, he praised the Finnish ambassador for his country’s decision to reopen its embassy in Manila in September.
“We are particularly interested in expanding ties, particularly in ICT (information and communication technology), renewable energy and clean technologies,” said the president.
