The Republican Party goes ahead with the January summit for the 2024 presidential candidates despite Trump planning his own career

  • The RNC holds its annual meeting on Amelia Island in Florida
  • RNC President Ronna McDaniel seeks reelection and has Trump’s support
  • She claims independence, although Trump installed her in office
  • Now the RNC has sent invitations to the main potential rivals for 2024
  • Trump has signaled that he could run again in four years
  • He also claims he ‘won’ the election he says was ‘rigged’
  • Trump released a 46-minute video Wednesday complaining about the election.

Ronna McDaniel, President Trump’s elected chairman of the Republican National Committee, has invited a group of potential 2024 presidential contenders to the party’s annual winter meeting next month.

McDaniel, who announced in a letter that he is seeking a third two-year term and has Trump’s support, is welcoming even as Trump indicates that he may run again in 2024, even as he says he ‘won’ the November election, which he calls ‘rigged’.

Trump told RNC members at a White House Christmas party this week: ‘It’s been an incredible four years. We are trying to do another four years. Otherwise, I’ll see you in four years.

Among those who received the invitation: former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, Vice President Mike Pence (who plans to attend) and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, whose state is being ravaged by the coronavirus, Politico reported.

It is unclear if Trump himself will attend. He is making his first political trip since this weekend’s election when he is campaigning in Georgia, where his attacks on the vote have helped fuel a civil war within the party, and some allies are urging Republicans in Georgia to stay home during a runoff unless state is elected. Senators ask to revoke the state vote.

Trump’s political power and popularity with Republicans has the potential to freeze the field, but there are as many as a dozen potential contenders who could visit the conspiracy on Amelia Island in Florida. (The 2019 meeting was at Trump’s private golf club in Doral, Florida.)

A long line of Republicans is being invited to the talk festival, which could be an organizing opportunity for any candidate preparing to have Trump withdraw or back off, or even try to challenge him.

Among them are Haley, former South Carolina Governor Pence, who has loyally campaigned for Trump and defended his handling of the coronavirus, Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton and Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Cruz ran against Trump in 2016, only to be defeated at the end of the primaries after Trump insulted his wife and accused his father of being involved in the Kennedy assassination.

Other guests include Missouri Senator Josh Hawley, who like Cotton cultivates Trump’s base, and Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa, who survived an election challenge this year.

So is South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, the most prominent black Republican at a time when McDaniel is touting the party’s enhanced fortunes among minorities.

Florida Republican Senators Rick Scott, Marco Rubio and Trump loyalist Governor Ran DeSantis are invited, according to Politico.

Trump released a labyrinthine 46-minute video Wednesday complaining about the election, saying it was ‘statistically impossible’ for him to lose.
