Now Telecom has chosen Nokia as its equipment provider to implement a separate 5G network, as the Philippine operator advances its plans to launch mobile and fixed wireless access services nationwide.
As reported by Telegeography’s CommsUpdate, Now Telecom CEO Mel Velarde told local press that parent company Now Corp had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Finnish provider as part of its strategy “to expand a current guaranteed service to high-end markets using 5G FWA and extending the customer experience to consumers via mobile ”.
He added that, without legacy networks, the company “will rise above the competition” with its independent network.
Now Telecom confirmed its intentions to compete against established rivals Smart and Glove in July 2019.
Recently, he also sought advice for a possible IPO through an introductory listing.
CommsUpdate reported in September that Now Telecom obtained an extension of its provisional authority (PA) to install, operate and maintain a nationwide mobile telecommunications system, from the National Telecommunications Commission.
The company committed to investing PHP 6.3 billion ($ 131 million) in a national network for two years, according to the conditions established by the regulator.
